Site Re-organization

Hi Readers!

Just want to let you know I’ve re-organized the site for an easier read, with respect to the resource links on the left.  They are now arranged by type of interior resource.

As far as the non-interior green resources I had linked up, they are just in hiding right now.  They will be back, as I completely love to support my other green colleagues and it’s just great for referencing…”Where do I get a great organic facial….or where do I shop for eco conscious clothing?”

I am working on getting the eastside resources up.  In the meantime, just contact me directly if you are looking for eastside connections.

If there is anything you want to see or read about here on EcoKind and you don’t currently see it, please let me know.  All of this is for you and I want it to be the best it can be to serve your needs!

Announcing EcoKind Product Review!

I’m very excited to officially announce the unveiling of my product review feature here on EcoKind and for my green living column at Examiner.com/Seattle.

This has been a very exciting process from putting the call for product out on HARO, a great free PR and journalist resource, to getting my first batch of review products in the mail the other day!

Products featured will all be home and office interior related and reviewed for level of eco and people friendliness, as it’s important to take care of the people who make our products, as well as the environment that is affected by their making.

Keep your eye open!  I’m hoping to roll out some reviews in time for Christmas shopping.  I do have in my hot little hands right now a gift that is perfect for guys and which is dual-purposed!  Watch for that review after Thanksgiving!

And now, I’ll leave you all hanging, salivating and waiting for more! :)

Here is a great video about just a few of the many options with regards to eco-friendly furniture and décor that is out there.

Prepare your Interiors for Winter

Have you noticed the temperature dropping?

Does it have you dragging out your warmer coats, hats, gloves and scarves?

Yes, ’tis a ‘twee bit colder out now and ’tis also time to bring out and prepare your home décor interiors for winter, unless you’re into self-torture and want to freeze your katookus off, which makes it a bit hard to sit down!  These tips help keep the cold out, the warm in and the bills down.

What do you do to prepare your home interiors that is decorating-related? Following are a few tippers:

Curtains
Change your curtains to heavier fabrics or add a liner to the backside.  Gaiam usually has tie-on liners, as seen on the right, but seem to be temporarily not carrying them.  You can make them very easily from sheets.

  • Lay sheet flat against curtain.  Cut to fit if necessary and use either iron-on hemming tape or a machine to create a hem.
  • Attach ties at hanging intervals and tie them to back of tab tops or to the rod itself.  If you use clip-on curtain rings, just clip the panel up with the curtain.  The funkiest, cheapest, yet effective way is using safety pins to attach to back of curtains, which don’t show if you’re clever about it!

Throws and Blankets
Swap that lighter sofa throw or blanket for a heavier one - perhaps wool or something heavy knitted.  Add a blanket or two to your bedtops or if you have different weight comforters for the seasons, it’s time to change that one out too!

Sheets
Nix the poly/cotton sheets from your life and go purchase a top quality organic cotton set, be them flannel or regular cotton.  Flannels are warmer than cotton when you climb in, but cotton in general is warmer anyday than the poly combos, and healthier to sleep on, especially organic.

Firewood
Stock up your fireplace - check Craig’s List for people giving wood away from home remodels or cutting trees down.  If you buy the pre-made firelogs, make sure they don’t contain chemical bonders, petroleum waxes, etc.

Candles
Not necessarily an energy-saving tip, though good if the power goes out during winter storms.  Great for ambient lighting and relaxing, whether taking some “me” time, entertaining that one special guest or a whole slew of friends!  Look for alternative wax candles like soy, beeswax and plant oils, as well as natural botanical and aromatherapy oils.

Where to Shop?
Check out your local second use consignment and thrift stores for curtains and blankets.  Sometimes, there is a good find on Craig’s List or Freecycle as well.  Shop your local or online eco retail shoppes for sheets, candles and pre-made firelogs. Here are just a few resources.  Check out the EcoKind website for more listings.

Enlighten in Ballard } Lighting Retail

Just a few versions of Enlighten lamps

Check out these beautiful, natural, handcrafted table lamps from Enlighten, a Ballard district store with an online store as well.

I first came across these at one of my practitioner’s offices.  He has floor lamp versions and I fell completely in love with them.  I finally made it into the Ballard shop one day and practically fell over from all the beauty in one room - so many choices and styles!

Stop by the shop - the artist, Deaw, loves to chat about the designs!  In addition, purchases provide support for community organizations in Thailand that are in need of help.

Other artists have monthly local showcases throught the store to add to the already amazing product selection.

About the Artist
Enlighten lamps, which come in table, hanging and floor versions are the creation of Mr. Kalan (Deaw), who has been designing, creating and selling them in Seattle area markets.  When the demand grew for his product, he opened a showroom in Ballard.

Plover Organic 100% Organic Cotton Bedding

Plover bedding patterns are dude and diva friendly!

Yum Yum!  Check out this find from Plover Organic100% organic cotton bedding ensembles for your body to love sleeping and loving in!

Patterns are block-printed in a variety of mix and match patterns which are dude and diva friendly.

Quick facts about Plover’s bedding

  • Cotton is grown with non-genetically altered seeds in soil free of pesticides, herbicides and cyctotoxins, which keeps all of these chemicals away from your body and out of the environment.
  • Dyes are low-impact, fiber-reactive with no heavy metals.
  • They use fair trade manufacturing so everyone is paid fair, living wages for their dedicated labor talents.

Why Organic Cotton?

  • Plover wants you to know more about conventional cotton crops.  Here are some facts directly from their website:
  • They currently account for 25% of all insecticides used worldwide. Nearly 1/3 of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides (some of which are among the most toxic classified by the Environmental Protection Agency) are applied to every pound of cotton harvested.
  • Growing cotton organically means avoiding those toxic chemicals and their fallout, improving soil fertility and protecting farming communities at the same time. Buying organic supports environmentally and economically sustainable production, which is vital to the welfare of the planet.
